New Wittenstein Foundation event series kicks off
05.10.2023

Is it really five minutes to midnight? Or just twelve minutes to five? SPIEGEL bestselling author Vince Ebert will explore this question in his keynote “Lichtblick statt Blackout – warum wir beim Weltverbessern neu denken müssen" (Flash of light or total blackout? – Why we need to rethink the way we improve the world) forming part of the kick-off event for the Wittenstein Foundation’s new “shifts in perspective” series. Starting at 7.30 pm on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the Great Kursaal in Bad Mergentheim, the event is open to the public at no cost.
The Wittenstein Foundation is consciously seeking to tread new paths with “shifts in perspective” with the aim of interesting, motivating and inspiring as many people as possible. According to Dr Manfred Wittenstein, initiator and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, “In contrast to the critical, rational, objective and strictly logical approach that is otherwise the norm, this series of events offers a variety of artistic possibilities enabling diverse perspectives – and resulting in enormous constructive potential”.
A humorous plea for more rationality and pragmatism
In the keynote by the German physicist, author and comedian, everything revolves around the never-ending bad news on global warming, the energy crisis, the threat of blackouts and inflation. Ebert describes the impending apocalypse as a perennial topic, claiming that we’re desperate to save ourselves – if not the whole world – with more sustainability, more energy turnaround and less growth. But is it really five minutes to midnight? Or just twelve minutes to five? And how is Germany actually preparing for the future in the first place? Are we doing the wrong things for the right reasons? Or must traditional ways of thinking be completely overturned? These are just some of the questions that Vince Ebert, long-standing host of “Wissen vor Acht”, the German prime-time science show on ARD television, will be exploring with his special blend of humor and passion – coupled with a plea for more rationality and pragmatism.
