Würzburg Research and Transfer Award 2025

10.09.2025

The funding agreement was signed by (from left to right) Dr. Sascha von Berchem (Managing Director of the Wittenstein Foundation), Prof. Dr. Paul Pauli (President of the University of Würzburg), Erhard Frank (Chief Financial Officer of the Vogel Foundation), and Dr. Gunther Schunk (1st Chairman of the University Association of Würzburg).

The Würzburg Research and Transfer Award is entering its second round – and bringing with it a significant change: this year, the prize money will be doubled from €50,000 to €100,000. This has been made possible by the new participation of the Vogel Foundation Dr. Eckernkamp in addition to the existing support from the Wittenstein Foundation.

The award recognizes innovative, interdisciplinary research projects at Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg that have a lasting social impact. Last year, for example, the winner was a medical project that aims to use artificial intelligence to better detect precancerous colon cancer lesions during preventive colonoscopies. The increase in prize money for 2025 is intended to give the winners even better opportunities to take their projects to the next stage of development and accelerate the transfer of knowledge to society.

A prize with appeal

The President of the University of Würzburg, Prof. Dr. Paul Pauli, emphasizes the importance of regional cooperation: "This joint funding by two major players in our Main-Franconia region sends a strong signal. It underscores the confidence in the innovative strength of our university – and it specifically supports those interdisciplinary projects that develop social relevance and impact from excellent research."

The participation of the Vogel Foundation Dr. Eckernkamp, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, complements the previous funding provided by the Wittenstein Foundation and strengthens the sustainable development of innovation projects in the region. The award ceremony will take place on November 13, 2025, as part of the traditional festive concert of the University Association of Würzburg in the Neubaukirche. Further information on the call for entries and the application process is available on the website of Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg.
